Country: Netherlands
Closing date: 13 Feb 2017
Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an independent, medical, emergency relief organization that provides assistance to people worldwide, regardless of their background, religion or political convictions. Above all, we aim to save lives and to offer medical care to victims of disasters, wars and epidemics. Working together with local staff, we give direct support to the population. MSF also appeals to those in power, including governments and international organizations, and speaks out about the abuses we encounter in the course of our work.
MSF coordinates operations through collaborations between global offices. ‘Artsen zonder Grenzen Nederland’ (MSF-Holland) has a partnership with offices in the UK and Germany. This partnership, known as ‘MSF Operational Centre Amsterdam’ (MSF-OCA), operates medical humanitarian interventions in about 25 countries. Annually, MSF-OCA deploys approximately 1,100 international staff and employs some 7,600 national staff. The office of MSF-Holland located in Amsterdam hosts more than 250 employees, offering direct support to MSF-OCA operations.
The Fundraising department plays a key role in securing financial support & engagement among the Dutch public for the benefit of the programs conducted in the various project countries.
The department consists of 4 units, among which the Unit Relationship Management (6 staff excluding 1 volunteer), which is responsible for the contact with donors who significantly support us, or have the capacity to do so. The target groups this unit services are foundations, companies, wealthy individuals, and testators (legacies).
Given the operational ambitions that MSF has for the coming years, we need to increase our fundraising income. We see a growing role for Relationship Management. As a result of a change in the team and of a new fundraising project we aim to start, we are with immediate effect looking for an
International fundraising campaign manager (80%-100%)
Based in Amsterdam (preferably) or in a European MSF section
In this function you will be responsible for an international capital campaign, aiming to secure significant support for a groundbreaking clinical trial MSF is currently deploying. This is a very challenging job for a highly experienced major donor fundraiser.
In 2012 we started a project to develop a new treatment regimen for multidrug resistant TB (MDR-TB). This treatment will be shorter, less painful, with less toxic side effects and a higher success rate. If we succeed in implementing this new treatment regimen, this will have a major impact worldwide. This clinical trial takes place in Uzbekistan, Belarus and South Africa, and is being managed from our UK office. Mid-January 2017 we enrolled the first patients on this new regimen.Recently the budget of this project steeply increased over the next 4 years, and now we aim to raise this additional money from private donors (foundations, HNWI’s and companies), with the focus on new donors. We will do this together with some MSF-sections in other countries (probably UK, Germany, Canada and South Africa), with MSF-Holland taking the lead.
The candidate will report to the Coordinator Relationship Management.
MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES
Your tasks will consist of, amongst others:
- Conduct study, to get input on how to deploy this capital campaign
- Create case for support (and continuous update), also with the input from the study
- Oversee production of campaign communication materials
- Recruit leadership to help with this capital campaign
· Map, approach and engage prospect major donors and to some extent current donors (emphasis on the Netherlands). And manage a small portfolio of these (new) prospects and donors.
- Map, approach and engage people with an interesting network (for fundraising) who could help us reach our goal (emphasis on the Netherlands)
- Ensure good stewardship, e.g. update reports and organizing (international) events
- Liaise with the fundraising staff of all the participating sections (including MSF-Holland) and assist them where necessary (e.g. in the contact with prospects/donors, recruiting leadership, stewardship, etc.)
- Liaise with other MSF stakeholders, including the clinical trial project team in the UK, management and communication staff
In addition to the above, the candidate will need to take up some other unit-activities as well.
